What is a composite filling?
A composite filling is a white (tooth-colored) restoration used to repair damage to a tooth caused by decay, cracks or fractures. Because composites blend in so well with your tooth enamel they are almost always used on front teeth for a more natural smile. Many patients prefer composite fillings on their back teeth as well so they look natural when talking and laughing.

How are composite fillings different from amalgam (metal) fillings?
Composite and silver amalgam are the most widely used filling materials. Composite fillings do not require as much tooth structure removal to place the restoration, and unlike metal fillings, composite fillings can be closely matched to the shade of existing teeth. This makes your fillings almost invisible so your natural smile is all people notice. Although some composite fillings may be more expensive than metal fillings, most patients find the benefits are worth the extra cost. What is the procedure for composite fillings?
You filling will be done in one visit, although composite fillings may take a little longer than other filling materials. You’ll receive local anesthesia to keep you completely comfortable during the treatment. Your dentist will remove the decayed areas from your tooth, and then the area must be kept completely dry or “isolated”. After an adhesive is carefully applied to the inside of the open cavity, several thin layers of composite are applied and cured with a special light. You may notice some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for the first few days or a week, but this is not unusual. If sensitivity lasts longer please give us a call.

How long do composite fillings last?
With proper care, composite fillings will last a long time. But like most dental restorations they are not permanent and they may someday require replacement. If the edges of the filling open up, bacteria could enter the space and cause additional tooth decay. Good oral hygiene, healthy eating habits and regular dental exams with professional cleanings are recommended to extend the life of your new fillings.
