Professional Cleanings
What is a Dental Cleaning?
A Dental Cleaning (dental prophylaxis) is a preventative treatment that compliments your home care (i.e. brushing, flossing.) It is a way to monitor your overall oral health and maintain your teeth and dental restorations.

What will happen at my Dental Cleaning?
In addition to a complete dental exam, your cleaning appointment will include the following:
- Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that accumulates on the tooth surface both above and below the gum line. Tartar can only be removed with special dental instruments.
- Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, colorless film consisting of living bacteria, food debris and saliva. Unless plaque is removed, the bacteria will produce toxins (poisons) that can inflame the gums, leading to periodontal (gum) disease.
- Teeth polishing: Gentle professional polishing removes stains and traces of plaque that remain on the teeth so you can enjoy that “just left the dentist” clean feeling.

If I get my Dental Cleanings, will that prevent me from getting cavities?
Your dental cleanings are a vitally important part of maintaining your overall health. While cleanings are indispensable to the prevention of decay, your hygienist will be pleased to share tips to enhance the work you do at home to keep your smile healthy. As always, good oral hygiene practices and regular dental visits are recommended following your dental cleaning.

How often do I need a Dental Cleaning?
The regularity of your dental cleanings will depend upon your individual oral health needs. While most patients require cleanings twice a year, no two mouths are the same. Your hygienist will be able to determine how often you should return based on factors like home care, risk of decay and your overall health.
