What is periodontics?

Periodontics is the specialty branch of dentistry that is concerned with the prevention and treatment of diseases of the gums and bones surrounding the teeth. These diseases include gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums (gingiva), and periodontitis, a serious bacterial infection that can destroy the fibers and bone that hold your teeth in place.

I brush every day and my gums don’t hurt, so I’m not at risk for periodontal disease, right?

Periodontal disease is difficult to detect on your own and it often doesn’t cause any pain in its early stages. Also, while excellent oral hygiene reduces your risk, it does not completely eliminate the possibility that you will develop gum disease. The best way to reduce your risk is to make sure you are seeing your hygienist regularly for cleanings and having regular examinations by your dentist. Left untreated, periodontal conditions can lead to tooth loss and even heart disease.

What are some non-surgical periodontic treatments?

Non-surgical periodontal treatment can be sufficient in some cases. Scaling is a therapeutic treatment that involves the removal of plaque, calculus and bacteria from deep periodontal pockets. Planing is a treatment that consists of the cleaning and smoothing of the root surfaces so the gum tissue can attach more firmly to the root. This can help reduce sensitivity and prevent tooth loss. When necessary, non-surgical treatment is followed by the application of localized antimicrobials.

How will my dental team determine if I need a surgical periodontal procedure?

If you're diagnosed with periodontal disease and/or soft tissue erosion, periodontal surgery may be recommended. This becomes necessary when the tissue around your teeth has become so unhealthy or has eroded so much that non-surgical treatments alone will not repair it. Our periodontal specialist will perform a complete periodontal examination to determine the best treatment plan for you. Because we have a periodontist on staff, your treatment and follow-up care can be completed here at Amerident for maximum ease and convenience.

If I get periodontal treatment, will I be able to save all of my teeth?

In severe cases where periodontal surgery cannot repair the structures that hold the tooth in place, tooth extraction may be needed.
